Here at last is the final edit of our amazing Performing Arts production, complete with introductory video and post-concert interviews with the script writing team. ENJOY!!!!
Grade Two began their new unit, "Learning an Instrument - Focus on Xylophone". We explored the instrument range and discussed proper technique and then learned the song "Hot Cross Buns" using the C, D and E bars (or do-re-mi). Students who quickly mastered the song were invited to create variations or short original compositions.
In Grade One we began the unit "Dance From Different Places" with a survey of traditional dances that the students had previously heard of or seen from their home countries. We then watched a short video clip of examples of each of these dances. Later in the unit we will learn some of these dances, with the help of our student experts! Here is a list of descriptive words students came up with for each dance example:
In Grade Three we began our collaborative unit "Where We Are In Place And Time". In this unit we will be exploring personal histories through drama, as well as developing our presentation skills in preparation for the Grade Three assembly presentation at the end of the unit. This week we looked at the structure and roles of the short play "The Working Children".
Grade Four: Integrated Unit - "Who We Are"
We wrapped up our unit with a look at the role of Performing Arts in physical and spiritual wellbeing. We tried the Yogik dance known as Kaosikii, watched a clip of choral music for mental health and began a study of a healing dance from Mali. Here are the Venn diagrams students generated comparing Kaosikii and the Malian dance. Day 1 of learning Indonesian Gamelan piece. Great focus, team work and dedication, kids of 4.2!!! This is just the beginning! :) This week we have been finishing up our first Unit of Inquiry in Performing Arts and beginning our second. Students in most grade levels conducted a singing self-assessment, evaluating their own progress in singing with good posture, annunciation, pitch and music symbol recognition. Grade 2 completed an integrated unit with a focus on types of communication in the arts, including the relationship between the audience and the performer in various settings. All students had a chance to explore drama and dance in addition to music, as part of our new Performing Arts program
In the coming weeks most of the grade levels will be focussing on learning to play an instrument. In K1 and K2 students will focus on handheld percussion instruments. In Grade 3 students are beginning to learn recorder (please see Parent Info page for information on where to purchase a recorder). In Grade 4 the focus is in drumming and in Grade 5, ukulele. Grade 1 is involved in an integrated unit "Sharing The Planet" and Grade 2 has a focus on music from different parts of the world. Some photos from the first days of Performing Arts class . . . . This means that in addition to music, we now incorporate dance and drama into our weekly lessons. Students have shown great enthusiasm for this change and the first couple weeks of the new school year have been hugely successful! I look forward to an exciting year ahead of making music, drama and dance with all the elementary students at ISS!!!
